Should my daughter have homework?

My 10 year old goes to specialist school 3 days each week and mainstream 2 days each week.
Mainstream has been great for her but now in grade 4 its getting quite hard for her, they give her the same work as the other children also the same homework. At school they say she is capable but when it comes to home work she is not and I end up doing it all for her. Her sister is 8 years old and overtaking her in most school subjects so how can the school still be saying that she's at her age level when I know myself she is not. Why wont the school except that my daughter needs now an IEP and be taught at her own level rather than be pushing her so hard.

Yes. Wrightslaw.com can help. Be cautious when reading it however, because not all educators have a separate agenda for your child as the Wrights often write about.

Also, consider this. Perhaps your child is completing this work at school, but is not generalizing the material to the home setting. Have you asked the teachers about the exact prompts that they are using? If you use the same words or prompts, maybe you will get a different result.

I agree however, that homework should not be a struggle. There are many believers that homework should be practice and your child should be able to complete it almost independently. Consider these blog posts-

I would contact the Special Education Director if you are not getting results with the school team. You, as a parent can request an IEP meeting at anytime, so long as she has already had an initial IEP. Also, Wrightslaw.com has some great information for parents about working with school teams and advocacy.
